Making Tax Digital for Self Assessment (MTD)

HMRC’s Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD) is changing how self-employed individuals and landlords report their income.

From April 2026, most self-employed people and landlords earning over £50,000 will need to keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC using approved software.

We make sure you’re ready — with simple, compliant solutions that take the stress out of digital tax.

What Is MTD for Self Assessment?

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is part of HMRC’s plan to modernize the UK tax system.
Under MTD for Self Assessment, you’ll need to:

  • Keep your income and expense records digitally

  • Use HMRC-recognized software (like Xero, QuickBooks, or FreeAgent)

  • Send quarterly updates instead of one yearly Self Assessment return

  • Submit a final declaration at year-end

It’s a big change — but with the right setup and support, it can make managing your taxes easier and more accurate.

Up Coming Changes – What You Need to Know

  • In April 2027, anyone with income over £30,000 will be required to follow MTD for Self Assessment.

  • In April 2028, that threshold drops to £20,000, bringing more self-employed people and landlords into the digital regime.

  • Once in scope, final declarations must be submitted via HMRC-recognised software (not the older HMRC Self Assessment online service).

  • It’s more important than ever to adopt good digital recordkeeping habits now and choose software that will grow with you.
